Description

This module identifies when children have a right to advocacy and the main reasons they might need one. Our aim is to equip you use advocacy skills with children and young people and understand better the role of advocates you work with. We define different types of advocacy and summarise the role and boundaries of the advocate. We review effective advocacy and child-centred practice. As well as new advocates, foster carers, young people in need of care services and professionals working with them will find this a helpful tool for supporting children and young people to have a voice in decision-making.

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  • Define different types of advocacy

  • Explain the role and boundaries of a children’s advocate

  • Identify when children have a right to advocacy

  • Summarise how advocacy and a rights-based approach can help children achieve positive outcomes.

This is the e-learning module, with on average five hours of e-learning activities, research and assessment. You can complete the programme in your own time and at your own pace. We encourage you to join and interact with the e-learning group through the course forum. This gives you an additional opportunity to engage with others to share ideas, experience and perspectives. It is a virtual space for discussion, learning and considering questions raised by the module. Many modules include an optional live webinar, video stream or podcast. We encourage you to engage with other learners to extend your learning and gain full advantage from the course, but it is not required for assessment. Your tutor will join in the course forum and provide feedback on your work as you submit assignments.
